Worthing is a substantial seaside town on the south coast of England, situated between Brighton and Chichester on the West Sussex coast. The town developed from a small fishing and farming settlement into a fashionable seaside resort during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Its long seafront, pleasant climate and proximity to the South Downs have made it an important destination for both visitors and residents. Today Worthing is one of the largest towns in West Sussex and an important cultural, commercial and residential centre.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Worthing Pier is the town's most recognisable landmark and stretches into the English Channel from the central seafront. The surrounding promenade, beach and Marine Gardens provide a popular setting for walking, cycling and enjoying the coastal views. Worthing Museum and Art Gallery contains collections covering local history, archaeology and art, while the nearby South Downs offer extensive opportunities for hiking and exploring the countryside. The town is also well positioned for visiting Brighton, Arundel Castle, the Sussex coast and the villages and landscapes of the South Downs National Park.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Worthing has a diverse food scene ranging from traditional fish and chips and seaside cafés to independent restaurants, pubs and contemporary dining. The town centre offers a mixture of national retailers and independent shops, while the seafront provides numerous cafés and places to enjoy a meal with sea views. Summer is ideal for beach activities and enjoying the pier, while spring and early autumn are excellent for walking along the coast and in the nearby South Downs. Worthing's railway connections also make it convenient for day trips to Brighton and other Sussex destinations.
