Whitehaven is a historic port town on the Cumbrian coast, situated on the Irish Sea between Workington and St Bees. The town expanded dramatically during the eighteenth century through maritime trade, coal exports and the importation of tobacco. Its planned Georgian streets and harbour remain prominent features of the townscape.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

Whitehaven Harbour is the centrepiece of the town's historic character, with quays and maritime structures reflecting its former importance as a trading port. The Rum Story explores the town's maritime and trading connections, while the Beacon Museum presents the history of Whitehaven and the wider Copeland area.

The nearby St Bees Head provides dramatic coastal scenery, walking routes and opportunities for birdwatching. Whitehaven is also a gateway to the western Lake District, with the mountains and lakes of Cumbria within easy reach.

Food and shopping

Whitehaven has cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, supermarkets, independent shops and businesses around the historic harbour. Cumbrian specialities such as local lamb, Cumberland sausage, cheeses and seafood feature in the regional food culture. Spring through autumn is particularly suitable for exploring the harbour and St Bees coastline, while the town's museums and Georgian heritage provide year-round interest.
