Whickham is a historic settlement in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead, situated on a hill overlooking the River Tyne west of Newcastle upon Tyne. The village has medieval origins and developed as an agricultural and trading community before becoming increasingly connected with the industrial growth of Tyneside. Its elevated position has given it attractive views across the Tyne Valley and towards Newcastle. Today Whickham retains a village-like historic centre while forming part of the wider Tyneside urban area.

The historical and tourist importance of the area

Whickham's historic centre contains traditional buildings and St Mary's Church, while the surrounding streets retain much of the character of an old village. Nearby Gibside, a National Trust estate with extensive gardens, woodland and the ruins of Gibside Hall, is one of the area's major attractions. The Derwent Walk Country Park follows a former railway route and is popular with walkers and cyclists. Newcastle and Gateshead provide major cultural attractions, including the Angel of the North, museums and the quayside.

Food and when to visit

Whickham has cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs and local shops, while nearby Newcastle and Gateshead offer a much wider range of dining and shopping. Northumbrian produce and traditional British food feature prominently in the local area. Spring through early autumn is particularly pleasant for exploring Gibside, the Tyne Valley and surrounding parks. Whickham is a convenient quieter base for visitors who want easy access to Newcastle while staying close to countryside.
