Wellington is a historic market town in Somerset, situated at the foot of the Blackdown Hills close to the Devon border. The town developed as a medieval market and cloth-making centre and later became known for the production of woollen goods and textiles. Its position on the route between Somerset and Devon helped Wellington prosper as a transport and trading centre. Today it is a lively local town surrounded by attractive hills and farmland.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

The Wellington Monument, a distinctive triangular obelisk dedicated to the Duke of Wellington, stands prominently above the town on the Blackdown Hills and provides extensive views across the surrounding landscape. Wellington's historic centre contains traditional buildings, independent shops and the Church of St John the Baptist. Nearby, the Grand Western Canal offers walking, cycling and boating opportunities, while the Blackdown Hills provide numerous countryside trails. Taunton, the Quantock Hills and the Devon border are all within easy reach.

Food and when to visit

Wellington has cafés, bakeries, restaurants, traditional pubs and independent shops, with Somerset cider, local cheeses and West Country produce widely available. Spring through early autumn is ideal for walking in the Blackdown Hills and visiting the Wellington Monument. Autumn provides particularly attractive countryside scenery, while the town itself can be explored throughout the year. Wellington is a convenient stopping point on routes between Taunton, Exeter and the wider southwest.
