Treffynnon, commonly known in English as Holywell, is a historic town in Flintshire, North Wales, situated close to the Dee Estuary and the North Wales coast. The town developed around St Winefride's Well, a celebrated Christian pilgrimage site whose origins are traditionally associated with the seventh century. Industrial development, particularly lead mining and related industries, later became important to the local economy. Today the town combines a rich religious and industrial heritage with access to the North Wales coast and surrounding countryside. Spring through autumn are particularly suitable for visiting the historic sites and exploring nearby coastal and rural landscapes.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

St Winefride's Well is Treffynnon's defining historic attraction and has attracted pilgrims for centuries. The well and associated chapel form an important example of medieval and later religious architecture and remain a significant pilgrimage destination. The town's industrial heritage reflects the importance of lead mining and metalworking in Flintshire, while nearby Greenfield Valley Heritage Park preserves elements of the area's industrial and agricultural history. The North Wales coast, Flint Castle and the Clwydian Range provide further opportunities for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Food and leisure

Treffynnon has cafes, traditional pubs, restaurants, bakeries and local shops, with larger retail centres available in nearby Flint and Prestatyn. Welsh and British dishes are represented alongside modern and international cuisine. Visitors can combine local dining with a visit to St Winefride's Well, Greenfield Valley or walks through the surrounding Flintshire countryside.
