Tref-y-Clawdd, known in English as Knighton, is a historic market town in Powys, situated directly on the Wales-England border. The town developed as an important settlement in the Welsh Marches and retains strong connections with the medieval borderland. Its location beside the River Teme and the surrounding rolling countryside give it a distinctive rural character.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

Knighton is closely associated with Offa's Dyke, the famous eighth-century earthwork that passes through the town and provides one of the region's most important long-distance walking routes. The remains of Knighton Castle and the historic town centre reflect its medieval Marches heritage. The surrounding Radnorshire countryside offers opportunities for walking, cycling and wildlife watching.

Food and local life

Tref-y-Clawdd has traditional pubs, cafés, restaurants, bakeries and independent shops serving the local community and visitors walking the Offa's Dyke Path. Welsh and border-region produce, local meats, cheeses and traditional dishes are common. Spring through early autumn is particularly suitable for exploring the surrounding hills and long-distance walking routes.
