Thorne is a historic market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, situated north-east of Doncaster near the Humberhead Levels. The town developed as a local market and transport centre and later became closely connected with the canal and drainage networks of the surrounding lowlands. Its population is around 17,000, making it one of the larger settlements in the northern part of the borough. The surrounding landscape is unusually flat and contains extensive wetlands, waterways and agricultural land.

The Stainforth and Keadby Canal passes close to Thorne and provides opportunities for walking, cycling, fishing and boating.
