Stratton is a historic village in north Cornwall, situated just inland from Bude and close to the Devon border. The settlement has medieval origins and was historically an important local centre for agriculture and trade. Stratton is also remembered for the Battle of Stratton, fought nearby during the English Civil War in 1643. Today the village is closely connected with Bude but retains its own historic character and rural surroundings.

The historical and tourist importance of the village

The historic church and traditional buildings around Stratton reflect its long history, while the battlefield associated with the Battle of Stratton provides an important connection with the English Civil War. The village is only a short drive from Bude and its beaches, including Summerleaze Beach and Widemouth Bay. The South West Coast Path provides spectacular walking opportunities along the cliffs and coves of the north Cornish coast. The Tamar Lakes and surrounding countryside are also nearby and offer opportunities for walking, cycling and water-based activities.

Food and when to visit

Stratton has traditional pubs, cafés and local businesses, while Bude provides a much wider choice of restaurants, shops and leisure facilities. Cornish pasties, fresh seafood and other regional specialities are popular throughout the area. Late spring through early autumn is the best time for enjoying the nearby beaches and coastal paths. Stratton works particularly well as a quieter historic stop when visiting Bude and the north Cornwall coast.
