St Albans is a historic cathedral city in Hertfordshire, situated about 20 miles north-west of central London. The city developed from the important Roman settlement of Verulamium and later became a major medieval religious centre. Its long history has left a remarkable collection of Roman, medieval and Georgian buildings throughout the city. Today St Albans is also an important residential and commercial centre, benefiting from its close proximity to London.

The historical and tourist significance of the city

The Roman Theatre of Verulamium, the remains of the Roman city and the Verulamium Museum are among the most important attractions for visitors interested in ancient history. St Albans Cathedral dominates the historic centre and incorporates elements from the Roman, Saxon and medieval periods. The city also has one of the oldest and most characterful traditional markets in England, held in the main market area. Verulamium Park provides extensive green space around the Roman remains, while nearby St Albans Abbey and Sopwell Nunnery add further historical interest.

Food, shopping and leisure

The historic centre has a strong selection of independent cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs and shops, with many occupying attractive historic buildings. Local markets provide fresh produce and speciality foods, while the city's proximity to London has contributed to a varied and sophisticated food scene. Spring and summer are particularly pleasant for exploring the Roman ruins, parks and historic streets, although the cathedral and museums make St Albans suitable throughout the year. Its fast rail connections also make it an easy destination for a day trip from London.
