Southwell is a historic cathedral city and market town in Nottinghamshire, situated between Nottingham and Newark-on-Trent. The settlement has ancient origins and became an important religious centre following the establishment of its collegiate church, which later developed into Southwell Minster. The town also has strong connections with the history of Nottinghamshire and the English Civil War. Today Southwell combines an attractive historic centre with a peaceful rural setting and is one of the county's most important heritage destinations.

The historical and tourist importance of the city

Southwell Minster is the town's outstanding landmark, renowned for its Norman architecture, medieval carvings and distinctive twin towers. The nearby Archbishop's Palace provides another important medieval attraction, while the National Trust's Southwell Workhouse offers a fascinating insight into Victorian social history. The town centre contains attractive Georgian and older buildings, independent shops and traditional streets. The surrounding Nottinghamshire countryside provides opportunities for walking and cycling, while Newark Castle and Nottingham city centre are both accessible for longer excursions.

Food and when to visit

Southwell has cafés, tearooms, traditional pubs, restaurants, bakeries and independent shops, with local produce and classic British food well represented. The town's historic atmosphere makes it particularly suitable for a relaxed day trip rather than a fast sightseeing stop. Spring through early autumn is ideal for combining the historic centre with walks through the surrounding countryside, although Southwell Minster and the museums can be visited throughout the year. It is an excellent stop between Nottingham, Newark and the wider Nottinghamshire heritage attractions.
