Somerton is a historic market town in Somerset with origins dating back to the Anglo-Saxon period. It is traditionally associated with the early administration of Somerset and gave its name to the county, although the main county administration later moved elsewhere. The town developed as a local market and agricultural centre and retains a compact historic core with many traditional buildings. Today Somerton is a small rural community surrounded by the landscapes of the Somerset Levels and the South Somerset countryside.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Somerton's medieval market square, narrow streets and historic buildings provide much of its character, with St Michael and All Angels Church standing prominently above the town. The surrounding countryside is particularly attractive for walking and cycling, with the Somerset Levels and wetlands lying nearby. Glastonbury, with its famous abbey and Tor, is a short drive away, while the historic towns of Wells and Sherborne provide further cultural attractions. Ham Wall and other wetland reserves are also accessible for birdwatching and nature walks.

Food and when to visit

Somerton has traditional pubs, cafés, restaurants, bakeries and independent shops, with Somerset cider, cheeses and local produce featuring strongly. Spring and summer are especially pleasant for exploring the historic centre and surrounding countryside, while autumn brings attractive rural scenery. The nearby Somerset Levels are particularly rewarding for birdwatching during migration and winter. Somerton is a useful small-town stop between Yeovil, Glastonbury and the wider Somerset countryside.
