Sheerness is the principal town on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent and stands on the northern coast of the island. The town grew around the strategic naval dockyard established in the seventeenth century and later became an important commercial port. Its position at the mouth of the River Medway gives it a strong maritime character. Today Sheerness is a sizeable coastal community and an important part of the North Kent economy.
