Salisbury is a historic city in southern Wiltshire, located at the meeting point of several rivers and surrounded by the countryside of the Salisbury Plain. The city developed rapidly after the foundation of its cathedral in the thirteenth century and became an important religious and commercial centre. Today Salisbury is best known for its exceptional medieval heritage, attractive historic centre and close relationship with Stonehenge. Its compact size makes it particularly easy to explore on foot.

The historical and tourist significance of the city

Salisbury Cathedral is the city's defining landmark and is famous for its medieval architecture and tall spire. Visitors can also explore the cathedral close, the Salisbury Museum and the medieval streets around the Market Place. Stonehenge, one of the world's most famous prehistoric monuments, is only a short journey from the city and is the principal attraction in the surrounding area. Old Sarum, the remains of an earlier settlement and cathedral site, provides another important historical destination just outside the modern city.

Food, shopping and leisure

Salisbury has a lively selection of traditional pubs, cafés, restaurants and independent shops concentrated around the historic centre and market area. Local food and produce from Wiltshire feature in many restaurants, while the surrounding countryside provides opportunities for walking and cycling. Spring through early autumn is particularly pleasant for exploring the cathedral close, riverside and nearby archaeological sites. Salisbury's railway connections also make it convenient for visitors travelling from London or combining the city with other destinations in southern England.
