Ryton is a historic village in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead, located on the south bank of the River Tyne west of Newcastle upon Tyne. The settlement has medieval origins and developed as a rural and agricultural community before becoming increasingly connected with the industrial growth of Tyneside. Its position beside the river and surrounding open countryside gives Ryton a greener character than many neighbouring settlements. Today it remains a largely residential community with a distinctive historic village centre.

The historical and tourist importance of the area

Ryton's historic centre includes St Andrew's Church and traditional buildings that reflect the village's long history. Ryton Willows, an area of riverside woodland and grassland, is popular for walking, wildlife and views across the River Tyne. Nearby Gibside is a major National Trust estate with extensive gardens, woodland and the impressive remains of Gibside Hall. The Derwent Valley, Newcastle, Gateshead and the wider Tyne Valley provide numerous additional opportunities for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Food and when to visit

Ryton has traditional pubs, cafés and local businesses, while nearby Blaydon, Gateshead and Newcastle provide a much wider range of restaurants and shopping. Northumbrian produce, traditional pub dishes and modern British food are common throughout the region. Late spring through early autumn is especially pleasant for exploring Ryton Willows, Gibside and the riverside countryside. Ryton is a good choice for visitors seeking a quieter village setting while remaining close to Newcastle and the main attractions of Tyneside.
