Pwllheli is a historic market and seaside town on the southern side of the Llŷn Peninsula in Gwynedd. The town developed as a medieval market centre and later expanded through maritime trade, fishing and tourism. Its harbour and coastal location continue to play an important role in the local economy and identity.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

Pwllheli's historic market centre and harbour reflect its long-standing role as the commercial centre of the Llŷn Peninsula. The nearby beaches and coastline provide opportunities for swimming, sailing, walking and wildlife watching, while the Llŷn Peninsula is known for its scenic landscapes and numerous historic churches and coastal settlements.

Pwllheli is well positioned for exploring the wider Eryri (Snowdonia) region, including Criccieth Castle, Abersoch and the western mountains. The Welsh Highland Railway also provides access to some of the most spectacular landscapes in north-west Wales.

Food and shopping

Pwllheli has cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, fish and chip shops, supermarkets and independent retailers serving both residents and visitors. Welsh lamb, seafood, cheeses and locally produced ingredients feature strongly in the regional food culture. Spring and summer are particularly suitable for enjoying the beaches, harbour and coastal walks, while the surrounding historic attractions remain appealing throughout the year.
