Putney is a historic district in the London Borough of Wandsworth on the south bank of the River Thames. The settlement developed around the river crossing and became an important transport and commercial centre, while its proximity to London encouraged further growth. Putney has a particularly strong sporting and rowing heritage, with the annual Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race beginning from Putney Bridge.

The historical and tourist importance of the district

Putney Bridge and the River Thames form the centre of the district's historic identity, while St Mary's Church overlooks the river and contains important connections with the area's past. Putney Heath and Wimbledon Common provide extensive open landscapes, and nearby Richmond Park offers one of London's largest areas of protected parkland with deer and historic gardens. The Thames Path runs along the river and provides attractive walking routes. The Boat Race course makes Putney particularly significant to rowing and British sporting history.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Putney has a strong selection of restaurants, cafés, pubs, bakeries and independent shops, with British, Italian, Indian, Mediterranean, Japanese and other international cuisines widely available. Putney Exchange and the surrounding high street provide extensive shopping, while the riverside has numerous restaurants and pubs. Late spring through early autumn is especially pleasant for walks along the Thames, Putney Heath and nearby parks. The Boat Race period in spring is a particularly notable time to experience the district's sporting atmosphere.
