Port Talbot is a major town in Neath Port Talbot, South Wales, situated on the eastern side of Swansea Bay. The town has a long industrial history, particularly associated with iron and steel production, which has played a central role in its development and identity. At the same time, Port Talbot is surrounded by striking natural scenery, with the coastline of Swansea Bay to the west and the valleys and mountains of South Wales rising inland. Aberavon Beach provides a broad sandy coastline and is one of the town's best-known recreational areas. The nearby Afan Valley is particularly popular for mountain biking, walking and outdoor activities. Port Talbot's position between Swansea and the South Wales Valleys makes it a useful base for exploring the region. The combination of industrial heritage, coast and mountain scenery makes the area especially attractive from spring through early autumn.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Port Talbot's industrial heritage is strongly associated with its large steelworks, one of the most prominent industrial complexes in Wales. Aberavon Beach provides several kilometres of open coastline and is popular for walking, surfing and other seaside activities. Margam Country Park, just east of the town, contains extensive parkland, gardens, woodland and the historic Margam Castle. The Afan Forest Park inland from Port Talbot is another major attraction, particularly for mountain biking and walking. Swansea is also nearby and offers museums, galleries, shopping and additional coastal attractions.
