Plympton is a historic town forming part of the City of Plymouth, situated east of the main city centre along the River Plym. The settlement has Saxon and medieval origins and developed as an important market and port before Plymouth became the dominant regional centre. Plympton retains a substantial historic core, including medieval and Georgian buildings, despite later suburban expansion.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Plympton St Maurice contains some of the town's finest historic architecture, including the Guildhall and St Maurice Church, while the old market area reflects Plympton's medieval commercial importance. Saltram, a National Trust estate beside the River Plym, is one of the area's major attractions, with an elegant Georgian house, gardens and extensive parkland. The Plym Valley provides walking and cycling opportunities, while Dartmoor National Park is accessible from the wider Plymouth area. Plymouth's historic waterfront and naval heritage are also nearby.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Plympton has supermarkets, cafés, restaurants, pubs, takeaways and local shops, with a much wider choice available in central Plymouth. Traditional Devon food, seafood and British pub dishes feature alongside Indian, Italian, Chinese and other international cuisines. Late spring through early autumn is particularly pleasant for exploring Saltram, the Plym Valley and historic streets, while Plymouth's museums and waterfront attractions provide year-round interest. Plympton is especially suitable for visitors interested in Devonian history, riverside landscapes and access to Plymouth.
