Penryn is a historic town in Cornwall, situated on the Penryn River just inland from Falmouth. The town was granted important medieval privileges and developed as a port and centre for the export of granite and other local goods. Its maritime position and historic buildings give Penryn a distinctive character that differs from the larger nearby resort of Falmouth. Today it is also known for the University of Exeter's Penryn Campus and its connection with Cornwall's creative and educational communities.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Penryn's historic centre contains attractive granite buildings, narrow streets and the remains of its medieval and maritime past. The Penryn River provides a scenic setting for walks and waterside exploration, while nearby Falmouth offers beaches, maritime museums and the impressive Pendennis Castle. The university campus and surrounding Tremough area add a modern cultural dimension to the town. The Helford River, Lizard Peninsula and southern Cornish coast are all within easy reach by car.

Food and when to visit

Penryn has cafés, pubs, restaurants and independent businesses, with Cornish pasties, seafood and local produce among the regional specialities. Falmouth provides a much wider choice of restaurants, bars and shops just a short distance away. Late spring through early autumn is the best time for exploring the coast, while the mild Cornish climate makes the area attractive throughout much of the year. Penryn is particularly useful as a quieter base for visitors exploring Falmouth and the south Cornwall coast.
