Its history is closely connected with the medieval development of Pembroke and the surrounding Norman lordship. Today Penfro is primarily a local residential and rural community near some of Pembrokeshire's most important historic and natural attractions.

The historical and tourist importance of the area

Pembroke Castle is the principal nearby attraction and one of Wales's most impressive medieval fortresses, famously associated with the birth of Henry VII. The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is easily accessible and offers spectacular coastal paths, beaches, cliffs and wildlife. Nearby destinations include Tenby, Manorbier Castle and the Bosherston Lily Ponds. The area is particularly attractive for walking, coastal scenery and exploring the medieval heritage of south Pembrokeshire.

Food and when to visit

Local pubs, cafés and restaurants in Penfro and nearby Pembroke offer Welsh and British dishes, seafood and locally produced food. Tenby and the other coastal towns provide a wider range of dining and shopping options. Late spring through early autumn is the best time for coastal walking and beach visits, although the landscape remains attractive throughout the year. Penfro is most useful as a quiet base for exploring Pembroke, the national park and the south Pembrokeshire coast.
