Padstow is a historic harbour town on the north coast of Cornwall, situated on the western side of the Camel Estuary. The town developed around fishing, coastal trade and the natural harbour, and its narrow streets and traditional buildings still reflect this maritime heritage. In recent decades Padstow has become particularly famous for its food scene and association with prominent Cornish chefs. Despite its popularity, the town remains closely connected with fishing, boating and the surrounding coastal landscape.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Padstow Harbour is the heart of the town and is surrounded by historic streets, cafés, restaurants and small shops. The Camel Trail begins nearby and follows the former railway line along the estuary towards Wadebridge and Bodmin, making it one of the area's best cycling and walking routes. The beaches at Daymer Bay, Rock and Harlyn Bay are easily accessible, while the South West Coast Path provides spectacular views of the Atlantic coastline. The nearby Prideaux Place and the villages around the Camel Estuary add further historic and scenic interest.

Food and when to visit

Padstow is one of Cornwall's best-known food destinations, with seafood, Cornish pasties, local produce, bakeries and a wide range of restaurants. The harbour is especially lively during the summer months, when visitors combine sightseeing with fresh seafood and coastal walks. Late spring and early autumn can provide a more relaxed experience than the peak summer season while still offering good weather for outdoor activities. Padstow is an excellent stop on a north Cornwall itinerary linking Newquay, Port Isaac, Wadebridge and the Camel Estuary.
