Monmouth is a historic market town in Monmouthshire, situated at the confluence of the Rivers Wye, Monnow and Trothy close to the English border. The town has Roman origins and became an important medieval settlement because of its strategic position between Wales and England. Monmouth Castle is closely associated with Henry V, who was born in the town, giving it a notable place in English and Welsh history. Today Monmouth combines a well-preserved historic centre with easy access to the Wye Valley, Forest of Dean and surrounding countryside.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Monnow Bridge is one of the town's most distinctive landmarks and one of the few remaining fortified medieval town gates in Britain built over a bridge. Monmouth Castle and the nearby Nelson Museum provide further insights into the area's history, while the Shire Hall stands prominently in the historic centre. The Wye Valley National Landscape offers spectacular river scenery, walking and cycling routes, while nearby Tintern Abbey and the Forest of Dean provide additional major attractions. The Brecon Beacons and historic towns such as Abergavenny and Chepstow are also within reach.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Monmouth has restaurants, cafés, traditional pubs, bakeries and independent shops, with Welsh produce and local food well represented. The surrounding Wye Valley is known for orchards, cider, vineyards and high-quality local produce. Late spring through early autumn is ideal for exploring the river valleys and nearby countryside, while autumn is particularly attractive in the wooded Wye Valley. Monmouth is an excellent base for exploring the Welsh Marches, Monmouthshire and the Forest of Dean.
