Mitcham is a historic town in southwest London within the London Borough of Merton. The settlement developed from a Saxon and medieval village and remained relatively rural for centuries, with market gardening, lavender growing and other agricultural activities supplying London. Rapid suburbanisation during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries transformed Mitcham into a densely populated urban area, while Mitcham Common preserved a substantial area of open land.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Mitcham Common is the area's principal attraction, covering extensive heathland, woodland, ponds and grassland with numerous walking routes and important wildlife habitats. Mitcham Cricket Green is one of the oldest cricket grounds in the world and remains an important part of the town's heritage. The historic Mitcham Parish Church and surviving village buildings reflect the settlement's older character. Nearby Wimbledon Common, Richmond Park and Morden Hall Park provide further major green spaces and heritage attractions.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Mitcham has a diverse selection of cafés, restaurants, pubs, takeaways and local shops, reflecting the multicultural character of southwest London. South Asian, Caribbean, Middle Eastern and European cuisines are widely represented. Late spring through early autumn is particularly pleasant for exploring Mitcham Common and the surrounding parks, while the town's historic sites can be visited throughout the year. Mitcham is especially suitable for visitors interested in London's surviving village landscapes, open spaces and local heritage.
