Minehead is a historic seaside town on the north coast of Somerset, situated between the Bristol Channel and the western edge of Exmoor National Park. The town developed from a small fishing and trading settlement into a popular Victorian seaside resort as railways and tourism transformed the Somerset coast. Its sheltered position beneath North Hill gives Minehead a distinctive landscape of beach, woodland and open moorland. Today tourism is central to the local economy, with the town serving as an important gateway to Exmoor.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Minehead's long seafront, sandy beach and historic harbour are the centre of its tourism industry. North Hill rises directly behind the town and provides excellent walking routes and views across the Bristol Channel and Exmoor. Minehead is also the western starting point of the South West Coast Path, making it popular with long-distance walkers. Nearby Dunster Castle and the medieval village of Dunster are among Somerset's most attractive historic destinations, while Exmoor offers extensive opportunities for hiking, cycling and wildlife watching.

Food and when to visit

Minehead has a strong seaside food tradition, with fish and chips, seafood, cafés, ice cream shops, pubs and restaurants along the town and waterfront. Somerset cider and local produce are also widely available. Late spring through early autumn is the best time for enjoying the beach, coastal paths and Exmoor, although the landscape remains attractive throughout the year. Minehead is an excellent base for exploring western Somerset, Exmoor and the north Devon coast.
