Maghull is a suburban town in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, situated north of Liverpool and close to the edge of the Lancashire countryside. The settlement developed from a small rural community into a larger residential town during the twentieth century as Liverpool and the surrounding urban area expanded. Its position between the city and the coast gives Maghull convenient access to both urban attractions and open countryside. Today it is primarily residential but remains an important local centre in northern Merseyside.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Maghull itself is not a major tourist destination, but its surroundings contain several attractive natural and historic sites. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal passes through the area and provides walking and cycling routes through the countryside. The nearby Rimrose Valley and Sefton Coast offer open landscapes, wetlands and wildlife habitats, while Formby is known for its pine woods, red squirrels and sandy beaches. Liverpool city centre is easily accessible for major cultural attractions, museums, historic buildings and entertainment.

Food and when to visit

Maghull has cafés, restaurants, pubs, takeaways and local shops, with a wider choice of dining and shopping available in Liverpool and nearby Southport. British and international cuisine are both well represented throughout the area. Late spring through early autumn is particularly suitable for exploring the canal, parks and Sefton Coast, while Liverpool's indoor attractions make the region suitable for visits throughout the year. Maghull is best used as a convenient base between Liverpool, Southport and the northern Merseyside countryside.
