Lytham St Annes is a coastal town on the Lancashire Fylde, formed by the adjoining communities of Lytham and St Annes. The area developed as a seaside resort during the nineteenth century, when railways made coastal holidays increasingly accessible to visitors from northern England. Lytham retains a strong historic identity, while St Annes is known for its Victorian and Edwardian resort architecture, promenade and seafront. Together they form an important leisure and residential centre between Blackpool and the Ribble Estuary.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Lytham Green and its distinctive windmill are among the area's best-known landmarks, providing attractive views across the Ribble Estuary. The historic Lytham Hall and its surrounding parkland are another major attraction, while the long seafront at St Annes offers promenades, gardens and views towards the Irish Sea. Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club is one of Britain's most famous links courses and has hosted major championships. The nearby Ribble Estuary is important for wildlife, while Blackpool, Fleetwood and the wider Fylde countryside are easily accessible.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Lytham and St Annes have a strong selection of cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, seafood venues and independent shops. Fish and chips, ice cream and other traditional seaside foods are particularly popular along the coast, while Lytham's independent businesses provide a more refined dining and shopping atmosphere. Late spring through early autumn is the best period for enjoying the promenade, beaches and parks, although the town's restaurants, golf and heritage attractions make it suitable throughout the year. The area is an excellent base for exploring the Fylde coast without the intensity of central Blackpool.
