Lyme Regis is a historic seaside town on the Dorset and Devon border, situated on the Jurassic Coast overlooking Lyme Bay. The town has medieval origins and developed as a port and fishing settlement before becoming a popular seaside resort. Lyme Regis is internationally renowned for its geological importance and fossil discoveries, particularly through the work of the nineteenth-century fossil collector Mary Anning. The town's harbour, known as The Cobb, forms one of the most recognisable landmarks on the south coast, while the surrounding cliffs contain important evidence of Jurassic geological history. Lyme Regis is particularly attractive from spring through autumn, with summer ideal for beaches and coastal activities and cooler seasons well suited to fossil hunting and walking.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

The Cobb is Lyme Regis's best-known landmark and has protected the harbour for centuries. The town is closely associated with Mary Anning, whose fossil discoveries helped transform scientific understanding of prehistoric life. The Lyme Regis Museum explores local history and geology, while the Jurassic Coast provides opportunities to discover fossils and dramatic rock formations along the coastline. Nearby Golden Cap is the highest point on the south coast of England and offers spectacular views across Lyme Bay. The surrounding coastal path is part of the South West Coast Path.

Food and leisure

Lyme Regis has a strong seaside food culture, with seafood restaurants, cafes, traditional pubs, bakeries, ice-cream shops and independent food businesses. Fresh local seafood, Dorset produce and traditional British dishes are prominent. Visitors can combine dining by the harbour with fossil hunting, a walk along the Jurassic Coast or a visit to the town's museums and historic streets.
