Llanymddyfri, commonly known as Llandovery, is a historic market town in Carmarthenshire, situated where the River Towy meets the River Brân. The town has ancient origins and developed as an important market and drovers' centre, serving communities across the surrounding rural landscapes. Its position at the western edge of the Cambrian Mountains gives it an attractive setting between river valleys and upland countryside.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

Llandovery Castle, standing on a prominent mound above the town, is one of its principal historic landmarks and reflects the strategic importance of the area during the medieval period. The town also has strong connections with the Welsh drovers who once travelled through the region with livestock. Nearby landscapes include the Cambrian Mountains, the western Brecon Beacons and the spectacular routes around the River Towy.

Llandovery provides access to walking, cycling, fishing and wildlife watching, while nearby attractions include Dinefwr Castle, the National Trust property at Newton House and the scenic reservoirs and forests of the Cambrian Mountains.

Food and local life

Llandovery has cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, independent shops and local services. Welsh lamb, beef, cheeses, seasonal produce and locally made foods are important features of the regional cuisine. Spring through autumn is particularly suitable for exploring the surrounding mountains and river valleys, while the town's castle and heritage remain interesting throughout the year.
