Kingston upon Hull, usually known simply as Hull, is a historic port city in East Yorkshire situated where the River Hull meets the Humber Estuary. The city grew through maritime trade, fishing and shipbuilding and became one of Britain's most important ports. Its strong connection with the sea continues to shape Hull's identity, while extensive regeneration has transformed parts of the former docks and waterfront into attractive public spaces and cultural areas.

The historical and tourist significance of the city

Hull's Old Town contains some of the city's finest historic buildings, including Holy Trinity Church, Hull Minster, the Guildhall and cobbled streets lined with traditional pubs and independent businesses. The Hull Maritime Museum, Streetlife Museum and Ferens Art Gallery provide an insight into the city's maritime, industrial and cultural history. The Deep, one of Britain's best-known aquariums, is a major attraction beside the Humber. Hull was UK City of Culture in 2017, helping to establish a renewed cultural reputation and bringing further investment to museums, galleries and public spaces.

Food, shopping and leisure

Hull offers traditional British pubs, seafood, cafés and a growing selection of international restaurants. The city centre and Old Town are particularly enjoyable for independent shops, markets and historic pubs. The waterfront and marina provide pleasant places for walking and dining, while the Yorkshire coast and seaside resorts such as Hornsea and Bridlington are within easy reach. Spring and summer are especially good for exploring the waterfront and surrounding countryside, although Hull's museums and cultural attractions make it suitable for visits throughout the year.
