Kilmarnock is the principal town of East Ayrshire, situated between the Ayrshire coast and the inland hills. The town developed as a medieval market centre and later became an important industrial and manufacturing hub, particularly through engineering, textiles, publishing and other industries.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

Kilmarnock has a strong literary connection with Robert Burns and the publication of the first edition of his Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect in 1786. The town also has important engineering and industrial heritage, while Dean Castle provides a major historic attraction nearby.

Dean Castle Country Park offers walking, woodland trails and opportunities for wildlife watching. The surrounding Ayrshire countryside provides cycling and outdoor activities, while nearby attractions include the Burns-related sites of Alloway, Culzean Castle and the Ayrshire coast.

Food and shopping

Kilmarnock has cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, delis, supermarkets, shopping centres and independent retailers. Ayrshire produce, including beef, dairy products, seafood, cheeses and seasonal farm produce, features in the regional food culture. Spring through autumn is particularly suitable for exploring Dean Castle Country Park and the wider Ayrshire countryside, while Kilmarnock's cultural, sporting and shopping facilities provide year-round activity.
