Jarrow is a historic town on the south bank of the River Tyne in South Tyneside. The town is particularly famous for its early medieval monastery and its association with the Venerable Bede, one of the most important scholars of Anglo-Saxon England. Jarrow later became an important industrial and shipbuilding centre and was closely associated with the economic difficulties of the twentieth-century North East. Today the town forms part of the wider Tyneside urban area while retaining a distinctive historical identity. The River Tyne, nearby coastal landscapes and extensive transport connections make Jarrow a convenient base for exploring South Tyneside and Newcastle. Spring through autumn are especially suitable for exploring the historic and riverside areas.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Jarrow Hall is the town's principal heritage attraction and incorporates the site of the Anglo-Saxon monastery associated with the Venerable Bede. St Paul's Church contains important early medieval remains and provides a direct connection with the religious history of the settlement. The town is also remembered for the Jarrow Crusade of 1936, an important event in British social and political history. Nearby attractions include the Tyne riverside, South Shields and the Roman fort at Arbeia, while the wider North East coast provides beaches and scenic walking routes.

Food and leisure

Jarrow has cafes, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries and local shops, with a much wider selection available in nearby South Shields and Newcastle. North East specialities and traditional British pub food are common features of the local dining scene. Visitors can combine a meal in the town with a visit to Jarrow Hall, the riverside or nearby coastal attractions.
