Irthlingborough is a historic town on the River Nene in North Northamptonshire, positioned within the wider Nene Valley between Wellingborough and Rushden. The settlement has medieval origins and developed as a local agricultural and market centre before later becoming associated with quarrying, ironstone and other industries. Its location in the valley has shaped both the town's history and its surrounding landscape. Today Irthlingborough is closely connected with the neighbouring towns of Wellingborough, Rushden and Higham Ferrers.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

St Peter's Church is the town's most distinctive historic landmark, particularly because of its unusual lantern tower, which was traditionally used as a guide for travellers crossing the Nene Valley in poor weather. The church and surrounding historic streets provide a glimpse into Irthlingborough's medieval past. Nearby Stanwick Lakes is a major outdoor attraction, combining wetlands, wildlife habitats, walking routes and cycling trails across the Nene Valley. Rushden Lakes and the wider Nene Valley are also within easy reach, making the area suitable for visitors interested in nature, shopping and outdoor recreation.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Irthlingborough has local pubs, cafés, takeaways and independent businesses, while the larger neighbouring centres provide a wider choice of restaurants and shops. Spring through early autumn is the best period for exploring Stanwick Lakes and the riverside countryside. The town is particularly useful as a short stop when travelling through the Nene Valley between Northamptonshire's larger towns and the A1 corridor.
