Hwlffordd, commonly known in English as Haverfordwest, is the county town and administrative centre of Pembrokeshire. Situated on the River Cleddau, the town developed as an important medieval market and administrative centre under Norman influence. Its castle and historic streets reflect the town's long role as the principal inland settlement of west Wales. Today Hwlffordd remains an important commercial, administrative and transport centre for the county.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Haverfordwest Castle dominates the town from its elevated position above the river and is the most prominent reminder of its medieval history. The historic centre contains traditional buildings, churches and old market streets, while the riverside provides attractive walking routes. The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is within easy reach, with destinations such as St Davids, Tenby, Solva and Newgale offering spectacular coastal scenery. Pembroke Castle and the Preseli Hills are also accessible for day trips.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Hwlffordd has cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, supermarkets and independent shops, with Welsh produce and locally caught seafood common in the wider region. The town provides a convenient place to stock up before exploring the more rural parts of Pembrokeshire. Late spring through early autumn is particularly suitable for visiting the coast and walking the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. Hwlffordd is an excellent inland base for exploring almost every part of the county.
