Hereford is the principal city of Herefordshire and stands on the River Wye close to the border between England and Wales. The city has Anglo-Saxon and medieval origins and developed around its cathedral and important market functions. Agriculture has remained central to the local economy, with the region particularly famous for orchards, cider and Herefordshire cattle. Today Hereford combines its historic character with a modern role as the county's administrative, commercial and cultural centre.

The historical and tourist significance of the city

Hereford Cathedral is the city's principal landmark and houses the Mappa Mundi, one of the world's most important surviving medieval maps. The cathedral library also contains the famous Hereford Chained Library, while the nearby Black and White House Museum illustrates the city's Tudor heritage. The River Wye and surrounding countryside provide excellent opportunities for walking, cycling and canoeing. The Wye Valley, Malvern Hills and nearby Welsh border towns offer numerous options for day trips.

Food and leisure

Hereford is strongly associated with local agricultural produce, cider and traditional West Country food. Restaurants, pubs, cafés and farm shops make extensive use of regional ingredients, while the city centre contains independent businesses and markets. Spring and summer are particularly attractive for exploring the Wye Valley and surrounding orchards, while autumn is an excellent season for experiencing the local countryside and harvest traditions. Hereford is also conveniently positioned between the Malvern Hills, Brecon Beacons and the Welsh border.
