Greenwich is a historic district in southeast London within the Royal Borough of Greenwich, centred on the River Thames and Greenwich Park. The area developed as a royal residence and became closely associated with English naval history, scientific achievement and maritime commerce. Greenwich is home to an exceptional concentration of historic buildings and institutions, many connected with the former Royal Naval College and the Royal Observatory. Its historic core is recognised as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The historical and tourist importance of the district

Greenwich is home to the Royal Observatory, where the Prime Meridian is traditionally marked, and the National Maritime Museum, which explores Britain's maritime history. The Cutty Sark, a preserved nineteenth-century tea clipper, is one of the district's best-known landmarks. The Old Royal Naval College contains spectacular historic architecture and painted interiors, while Greenwich Park provides extensive landscaped grounds and panoramic views towards central London. The Queen's House and Greenwich Market add further cultural and visitor attractions, and riverboat services connect the district with central London.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Greenwich has a lively food and shopping scene, centred around Greenwich Market, the high street and the riverside. Visitors can find international street food, independent cafés, traditional pubs, bakeries and restaurants alongside local shops and specialist retailers. Late spring through early autumn is particularly enjoyable for exploring Greenwich Park and the riverside, while museums and historic buildings provide strong attractions throughout the year. Greenwich is especially suitable for visitors interested in royal, maritime, scientific and architectural history.
