Great Torrington is a historic market town in north Devon, situated on a hill above the River Torridge. The town developed as an important agricultural and trading centre and played a significant role during the English Civil War, when the Battle of Torrington took place here in 1646. Its elevated position provides attractive views over the surrounding wooded valleys and farmland. Today Great Torrington is known for its independent shops, historic character and strong community culture.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

The Great Torrington Heritage Museum and the Civil War history of the town provide insight into its important past. The nearby Torrington Commons offers extensive woodland and open countryside for walking, while the Tarka Trail follows the former railway route through the Torridge Valley and is popular with cyclists and walkers. RHS Garden Rosemoor is located nearby and is one of north Devon's leading garden attractions. The coast around Westward Ho!, Bideford and the North Devon beaches is also within easy reach.

Food and when to visit

Great Torrington has a good selection of cafés, traditional pubs, restaurants, bakeries and independent shops, with Devon produce and local cider commonly available. The town's independent character is reflected in its small galleries, craft businesses and community events.
