Forfar is the county town and administrative centre of Angus in eastern Scotland, situated in the fertile valley of Strathmore. The town has a long history stretching back to the medieval period and developed as an important market and administrative centre for the surrounding agricultural region. Its position between the Sidlaw Hills and the Grampian Mountains gives Forfar attractive views and easy access to both lowland and Highland landscapes. Today it remains an important local centre and a convenient base for exploring Angus.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Forfar Castle and the surrounding historic town centre reflect the area's medieval and royal heritage, while nearby Glamis Castle is one of Scotland's most famous country houses and is strongly associated with Scottish royal history. The Meffan Museum and Art Gallery explores local history, archaeology and culture, while Forfar Loch provides opportunities for walking and enjoying the countryside close to town. The Angus Glens offer spectacular mountain scenery further north, and the nearby towns of Kirriemuir, Brechin and Arbroath provide additional historic attractions. Forfar is also well positioned for excursions towards the Cairngorms and the Angus coastline.

Food and when to visit

Forfar has cafés, traditional pubs, restaurants, bakeries and independent shops, with Scottish dishes and local produce widely represented. The town is particularly associated with the Forfar bridie, a traditional savoury pastry filled with minced beef and onions. Late spring through early autumn is ideal for exploring the surrounding glens, castles and countryside, while autumn brings attractive colours to the nearby hills. Forfar is a useful base for combining the heritage of Angus with the landscapes of the eastern Highlands.
