Dorchester is the historic county town of Dorset, situated on the River Frome in the heart of the county. The town has a long history extending from prehistoric settlement through the Roman period and the medieval development of Dorset's administrative centre. Today Dorchester combines a compact historic centre with museums, independent shops, restaurants and attractive public spaces. The surrounding countryside is characterised by rolling chalk downs, river valleys and historic landscapes, while the nearby Jurassic Coast provides access to some of southern England's most important coastal scenery. Dorchester is particularly suitable for visitors interested in history, archaeology and walking. Spring through autumn are ideal for exploring the town and surrounding countryside.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Dorchester has exceptional archaeological importance, with the remains of the Roman town of Durnovaria forming an important part of its heritage. The Roman Town House is one of the town's principal archaeological attractions, while the Dorset Museum and Art Gallery contains extensive collections relating to local history, archaeology and natural history. Maumbury Rings and Poundbury provide further evidence of the area's long development. The town is also closely associated with the writer Thomas Hardy, whose birthplace and former home are nearby. The Jurassic Coast and historic sites such as Maiden Castle are within easy reach.

Food and leisure

Dorchester has a good selection of independent cafes, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries and specialist shops. Dorset produce, local cheeses, seafood and traditional British dishes feature prominently in the regional food culture. Visitors can combine dining and shopping in the historic centre with museum visits, archaeological sites or walks across the surrounding Dorset countryside.
