Cookham is a historic village in Berkshire situated on the River Thames between Maidenhead and Marlow. The settlement has medieval origins and developed around the river, with its position on the Thames shaping both its economy and landscape. Cookham became particularly associated with the artist Sir Stanley Spencer, who described the village as a major inspiration for his work. Today it retains a strong village character surrounded by meadows, woodland and attractive riverside scenery.

The historical and tourist importance of the village

Cookham Moor and the Thames provide some of the area's most attractive walking landscapes, with paths leading through meadows and along the river. The Stanley Spencer Gallery, housed in the former Methodist chapel, contains an important collection relating to the artist and his connection with Cookham. Nearby Cliveden is a major National Trust estate with formal gardens, woodland and spectacular views over the Thames. The village itself contains historic streets, traditional inns and buildings that reflect its long history.

Food and when to visit

Cookham has a strong selection of traditional pubs, restaurants, cafés and independent food businesses, many of which benefit from the village's picturesque setting. Berkshire produce and classic British dishes feature prominently in local dining. Late spring through early autumn is particularly pleasant for riverside walks, exploring the meadows and visiting Cliveden, while the village remains attractive throughout the year. Cookham is especially suitable for visitors interested in English village scenery, riverside landscapes and literary or artistic heritage.
