Cobham is a historic town in Surrey within the borough of Elmbridge, situated southwest of London between the River Mole and the Surrey Hills. The settlement has medieval origins and developed from a rural village into a prosperous commuter town during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Cobham retains an attractive centre with historic buildings while being surrounded by extensive woodland, parkland and estates. Its location gives it easy access to both London and the countryside of Surrey.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Painshill Park is the area's principal attraction, a renowned eighteenth-century landscaped garden featuring lakes, woodland, bridges and the famous Gothic Temple. Nearby Brooklands Museum preserves the history of the pioneering motor-racing circuit and aviation site and contains an important collection of historic vehicles and aircraft. The River Mole and surrounding Surrey countryside provide opportunities for walking and cycling, while RHS Garden Wisley is also within convenient reach. Hampton Court Palace is a short journey away and provides one of the region's major historic attractions.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Cobham has a strong selection of restaurants, cafés, pubs, bakeries and independent shops, with a notably broad range of international cuisine. The town centre provides everyday shopping, while nearby larger centres offer additional retail options. Late spring through early autumn is ideal for visiting Painshill Park, Brooklands and the surrounding countryside, particularly when the gardens are in bloom. Cobham is particularly suitable for visitors wanting to combine historic estates and Surrey countryside with convenient access to London.
