Clitheroe is a historic market town and the administrative centre of the Ribble Valley district in Lancashire. The town developed around Clitheroe Castle, a Norman stronghold built on a prominent limestone hill overlooking the surrounding Ribble Valley. Its strategic location helped establish Clitheroe as an important medieval settlement and later as a regional market centre. Today the town combines a lively historic centre with a strong connection to the surrounding countryside.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Clitheroe Castle is the town's most prominent landmark, with the keep and castle grounds offering wide views across the Ribble Valley towards Pendle Hill. The Clitheroe Castle Museum explores local geology, archaeology and history, while the surrounding town centre contains independent shops, cafés and historic buildings. The Forest of Bowland, Pendle Hill and the Yorkshire Dales are all accessible for walking and outdoor activities. Nearby attractions include Bolton Abbey, Whalley Abbey and the historic villages of Ribchester and Downham.

Food and when to visit

Clitheroe has an excellent selection of independent cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries and food shops, reflecting the strong food culture of the Ribble Valley. Lancashire cheese, local meats, pies, ales and regional produce are particularly popular. Spring through early autumn is ideal for combining the town's historic attractions with walks in the surrounding countryside. Clitheroe is an excellent base for exploring the Forest of Bowland, Pendle Hill and the wider Lancashire and Yorkshire borderlands.
