Cheltenham is a historic spa town in Gloucestershire, situated at the foot of the Cotswolds. The discovery and promotion of its mineral springs during the eighteenth century transformed the settlement into a fashionable Regency spa resort visited by royalty and wealthy travellers. Elegant architecture, landscaped gardens and broad avenues from this period still define much of the town centre. Today Cheltenham is a major cultural, educational and tourism centre with a reputation for festivals, arts and high-quality architecture.

The historical and tourist importance of the city

Cheltenham's Regency architecture is one of its defining attractions, particularly around The Promenade, Montpellier and the town's historic gardens. The town hosts major annual events including the Cheltenham Literature Festival, Jazz Festival and Science Festival, as well as the famous Cheltenham Festival horse-racing meeting. Pittville Park and the historic Pittville Pump Room provide another important example of the town's spa heritage. The Cotswold villages, Broadway, Bourton-on-the-Water and the surrounding countryside are all within easy reach.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Cheltenham has a strong food and drink scene ranging from traditional pubs and cafés to modern restaurants, independent bakeries and international cuisine. The Promenade and Montpellier offer extensive shopping, dining and leisure opportunities in attractive historic surroundings. Spring through early autumn is particularly pleasant for exploring the gardens and Cotswold countryside, while the town's festivals provide reasons to visit throughout the year. Cheltenham is an excellent base for exploring the Cotswolds, Gloucester and the wider Gloucestershire region.
