Caversham is a historic suburb immediately north of the River Thames opposite central Reading. The settlement has medieval origins and developed as an independent village before becoming closely integrated with Reading as the town expanded. Its position beside the Thames and its proximity to several parks give Caversham a greener character than much of the surrounding urban area. Today it combines historic streets and riverside landscapes with modern residential neighbourhoods and strong connections to Reading.

The historical and tourist importance of the area

Caversham Court Gardens provide attractive riverside gardens surrounding a historic house, while the Thames Path offers scenic walking routes along the river. Caversham Heath and nearby Mapledurham provide access to the countryside and historic landscapes of the Thames Valley. Reading Abbey and the historic centre of Reading are immediately across the river and contain important medieval remains and museums. The surrounding Chiltern Hills and Berkshire countryside also offer opportunities for walking, cycling and scenic excursions.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Caversham has a strong selection of cafés, restaurants, pubs, bakeries and independent shops, particularly around the village-like centre. Reading provides a much larger range of shopping, dining and entertainment options only a short distance away. Late spring through early autumn is ideal for enjoying the riverside, parks and countryside, while Reading's museums and cultural venues provide year-round attractions. Caversham is particularly suitable for visitors seeking a quieter riverside base close to the facilities of Reading.
