Broughty Ferry is a historic coastal suburb of Dundee situated on the north bank of the Firth of Tay. Originally a fishing and ferry settlement, it grew rapidly during the nineteenth century as Dundee expanded and wealthy merchants built substantial homes in the area. The town retains an attractive combination of historic streets, Victorian architecture, harbour facilities and coastal scenery. Today Broughty Ferry is closely integrated with Dundee while maintaining a distinctive seaside character.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Broughty Castle is the area's principal historic landmark and now houses a museum exploring the history of the local community and the wider Tay estuary. Broughty Ferry Beach provides attractive views across the Firth of Tay and is popular for walking and seaside recreation. The harbour and waterfront offer opportunities to watch boats and explore the town's maritime heritage, while nearby nature areas support a variety of coastal wildlife. Dundee city centre is only a short journey away and offers major attractions including the V&A Dundee, the RRS Discovery and Dundee Contemporary Arts.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Broughty Ferry has a particularly good selection of cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries and independent shops, making it one of the livelier suburban centres around Dundee. Seafood and traditional Scottish dishes are widely available, alongside modern international cuisine. Late spring through early autumn is ideal for enjoying the beach, harbour and waterfront, although the town's restaurants and museums make it attractive throughout the year. Broughty Ferry is also a useful base for exploring Dundee, the Angus coast and the wider Tay region.
