Bridgnorth is a historic market town on the River Severn in south-east Shropshire, with the town dramatically divided between High Town on the hill and Low Town beside the river. The settlement was established in the medieval period and became an important strategic and commercial centre because of its position overlooking the Severn. Bridgnorth Castle was founded shortly after the Norman Conquest and the town later became an important market and trading centre. Its unusual topography, historic buildings and riverside setting give Bridgnorth a distinctive character.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

The ruins of Bridgnorth Castle are one of the town's most recognisable landmarks, while St Mary's Church in High Town is another important historic building. The Bridgnorth Cliff Railway, opened in 1892, connects High Town and Low Town and is one of the town's most unusual attractions. The River Severn provides attractive riverside walks, while the surrounding Shropshire countryside offers excellent opportunities for walking and cycling. Bridgnorth is also well placed for excursions to Ironbridge, Much Wenlock, Ludlow and the wider Shropshire Hills.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Bridgnorth has a strong selection of traditional pubs, cafés, independent shops, restaurants and delis, with local produce and classic British food well represented. The historic High Town and Low Town areas both have their own character, making the town particularly enjoyable to explore on foot. Spring through early autumn is ideal for combining the historic centre with walks along the Severn and in the nearby countryside. Markets and local events also contribute to the town's lively atmosphere throughout the year.
