Brentford is a historic town in west London at the confluence of the River Brent and the River Thames. Its position on important waterways helped it develop as a trading and industrial settlement, while the construction of the Grand Junction Canal further strengthened its role in London's transport network. The town has undergone extensive regeneration in recent years, particularly around the waterfront and former industrial sites. Brentford now combines historic waterways, modern residential developments and convenient access to some of west London's most important attractions.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

The Grand Union Canal and the River Brent are central to Brentford's heritage and provide attractive walking routes through the town. Nearby Kew Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the world's most important botanical gardens and is easily accessible from Brentford. Syon Park and Syon House provide another major historic attraction, with extensive gardens and parkland along the Thames. The Musical Museum and London Museum of Water & Steam offer further insight into the area's industrial and cultural history.

Food and when to visit

Brentford has a growing selection of restaurants, cafés, pubs and independent businesses, with further choices in nearby Chiswick, Richmond and Kew. The riverside and canal areas are particularly pleasant for outdoor dining and walking during warmer months. Late spring through early autumn is ideal for visiting Kew Gardens, Syon Park and the waterways, although the museums and historic attractions provide year-round interest. Brentford is a useful base for exploring west London while remaining within easy reach of central London.
