Bradford-on-Avon is a picturesque historic town on the River Avon in western Wiltshire, close to the Somerset border and only a short distance from Bath. The town grew around an important crossing of the river and developed a prosperous woollen cloth industry during the medieval and early modern periods. Its local architecture reflects this history, with many buildings constructed from the distinctive honey-coloured stone of the region. The combination of river, hills, historic streets and well-preserved buildings gives Bradford-on-Avon a particularly attractive character.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

One of the town's most remarkable landmarks is the medieval Tithe Barn, a large stone building that illustrates the importance of agriculture and the wool trade in the area. The Saxon Church of St Laurence and the historic bridge over the River Avon are other major sights, while the old town centre contains numerous seventeenth- and eighteenth-century buildings. The Kennet and Avon Canal passes close to the town and provides excellent opportunities for walking, cycling and canal-side exploration. Bradford-on-Avon is also an excellent starting point for visiting Bath, the Cotswolds, Lacock and other historic villages and landscapes in Wiltshire.

Food, shopping and when to visit

The town has an unusually strong selection of independent cafés, restaurants, pubs, bakeries and specialist shops for its size, with traditional British food and locally produced ingredients widely represented. Spring and summer are particularly attractive for exploring the riverside and canal, while early autumn offers pleasant conditions and fewer visitors. Bradford-on-Avon can easily be combined with Bath as part of a day trip or used as a quieter base for exploring the surrounding countryside.
