Bourne is a historic market town in Lincolnshire, situated where the limestone uplands meet the fenland landscape. The town developed around a natural spring and has a long history as a market and agricultural centre. Bourne's historic streets contain traditional stone and brick buildings, independent businesses and landmarks reflecting its medieval and later development. The town is also associated with the legendary medieval figure Hereward the Wake and with the development of Britain's motor-racing history through the nearby Bourne-based ERA and BRM traditions. The surrounding countryside offers opportunities for walking and cycling, with the Lincolnshire Wolds and fenland landscapes both accessible from the town. Spring through autumn are particularly pleasant for exploring the area.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Bourne Abbey Church is one of the town's most important historic landmarks, with origins connected to the medieval abbey founded in the twelfth century. The nearby Wellhead Gardens are associated with the natural spring around which the settlement developed and provide attractive landscaped surroundings. Bourne is also strongly associated with the British motor-racing engineers and manufacturers ERA and BRM, whose history forms an unusual part of the town's industrial heritage. Grimsthorpe Castle and the surrounding parkland are nearby, while the wider Lincolnshire countryside provides scenic walking routes.

Food and leisure

Bourne has cafes, restaurants, bakeries, traditional pubs, independent shops and regular local shopping facilities. Lincolnshire sausages, local produce and traditional British dishes feature in the regional food culture. Visitors can combine a meal in the historic town centre with a visit to Bourne Abbey, Wellhead Gardens or nearby country estates.
