Betteshanger is a small settlement in east Kent, situated between Deal and Sandwich near the English Channel coast. The area is closely associated with the former Betteshanger Colliery, one of the major coal mines of the Kent coalfield, which operated for much of the twentieth century. The closure of the colliery led to significant changes in the local landscape and economy, with former industrial land subsequently being restored and redeveloped. Today Betteshanger is primarily a residential and rural community surrounded by the historic landscapes of east Kent.
