Bedford is a historic market town in Bedfordshire situated on the River Great Ouse. The town developed as an important medieval market and administrative centre and later became associated with the lace industry and other manufacturing. Bedford has also had a strong connection with the writer and preacher John Bunyan, whose life and work are commemorated locally. Today it is the main urban and administrative centre of Bedfordshire's northern part and an important commuter and employment centre.
